Hearing that wo
rd 'Weapon' makes me cringe. I think of bombs, mass shootings, tanks, war. Sure, I could also think of 'Self Defence' but then that requires I then picture someone getting attacked.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I swore we would not have toy guns in our home. I embraced 'Waldorf' playgroups, a peaceful home educating environment, and no violent films.
Then they watched Bugs Bunny. I watched it with them! We laughed.
Then we watched Road Runner, Pink Panther, Daffy Duck, and we laughed whilst cartoon characters blew each other up.
Then, my kiddo's started turning their plain wooden blocks into 'boomers' and saying things like 'bang! bang! you're deaded'. or oddly enough, I hear Cypress saying 'Now say your
prayers before I boom you'.

I went through the initial shock and dread of 'Oh no! what have I done?'
But, like many parents do, I observed other parents and their children around me who follow similar family living principles as I do. And I notice their otherwise peaceful children doing the exact same thing. And I then think back on my own childhood where we did play with real looking toy pistols and cap guns and bow-n-arrows. We played 'war' a LOT growing up. and Cowboys and Indians. Cops and Robbers. I didn't turn into a gun slinging vigilante so I suppose my kiddo's will grow up with same values. I've decided to just chill out on this one and let them play and act out with whatever pretend boomers they imagine. It's all just play and imagination that I think I shouldn't interfere with. At least that is what my intuition is telling me, and it's yet to steer me wrong. On that note, my little 'princesses' have now decided to become 'cowgirls'
My two have never seen a cartoon like Bugs Bunny-they have never seen anyone shooting another person. What they have seen is hunters shooting game birds on a cooking show. That's all it took. It just took reading about bows and arrows for my son to start making them. This is a boy who has been too afraid to watch Thomas the Train, or the Numberjacks--as the one character is naughty! So it is true--it is part of our environment-and our history--it's inescapable. And as you said--most of us have never, and will never touch a real weapon.
