Home Ed-Family History Workshop

Yesterday our local Home Ed group met up for a 'Family History Workshop'.  Children and Parents alike learned how various cultures capture their Family History, and then enjoyed some hands on messy crafts, a 'Monster Moshi Family Tree' game followed by enjoying some yummy vegan chocolate cupcakes.

Now, I say 'we', because it was a cooperative day of everyone joining in; however, I forgot to mention that yours truly put together the workshop, which means, I've been VERY busy creating posters, booklets, instructions, and running around getting craft supplies, etc.  But it was all great fun, and I look forward to future workshops (we have many planned!)

Here's some snapshots from the Family History Workshop fun, and a few links just below so you can put on your own workshop if you fancy :)

We started off learning about how various cultures capture their Family History; such as

A lovely mum who taught us all about Scottish Tartans

Making Coat of Arms
Blogger keeps showing this pic sideways! but it's a Unicorn Coat of Arms
Before she cut it out and taped to cardboard tube

We then decorated some Family Questionnaire Booklets
designed so you can mail these to relatives who answer the Family History
questions, then mail back to you, allowing you to collect information about your Family

My attempt to make a poster explaining it all :)

Taking a break to play football

I created a Family Tree Game of the Monster family with 'Moshi Monster' being our lead character.
I printed 3 generations of Moshi's family members, including their family title with their picture.
Each child got a picture of a family member, and the object of the game was to
sort out which family member went where on the Family Tree.

Here I drew the Family Tree diagram, with Moshi at the bottom

It was a bit pandemonium but we got it sorted eventually

All in all a fun day, and we all learned something. We have some more fun workshops planned in the coming months, but First, shall be planning for a fun Halloween Party!!

  1. Wow! Am hoping to make it over sometime, still sorting out after 2 home moves in 6 weeks! Am I right in thinking it's £5 per family per session? Thanks :)

  2. Hi, I know how moving can be! 2 home moves in 6 weeks is challenging :) You are correct that the entry fee into Keystone Centre is £5 per session per family. That entry fee includes 1 child wishing to participate in the Workshop Events (which are optional to participate in since younger children and teens may not). We only ask an additional £1.50 per child in the family who will participate to cover the additional costs. So, for example, I have 3 children participating so my total cost is £8. But if my children only wanted to run around and play in the hall (which has much space to do that) then I'd only pay the £5.

  3. By the way, our next event at Keystone is 9th November and the them is 'Cooking School' so should be great fun :)
