and we created some tutu's!
Zephyr enjoyed a day out with his Gran and Dad visiting the nearby village of Bosham, whilst Indigo and Cypress made their own tutu's. I've had this tulle and organza fabric tucked away for a long while now, just waiting for that 'right moment' to surprise the girls. The excitement they expressed when I asked 'would you like to make your own tutu?' will be a memory I treasure forever.
I'll attempt to explain how we made these 'no sew' tutu's
First: buy lots of tulle and organza. I forget how much I bought, but there's the pile we started with, and thankfully I had more.
Second: cut fabric in to long thin strips. I've posted a picture of the strips folded in half.
Third: measure and sew an elastic waist band to fit child's waist. This part was some great maths lesson with kiddo's using measuring tape, calculating how many inches, learning their waste size, adding 1 inch for sewing
Fourth: stretch the elastic band over the back of a chair, and then slip-knot all the fabric strips around the waistband in a pattern of colours. This requires zero sewing and easy enough (yet challenging) for kiddo's to maneuver. (see picture of Cypress making hers)
Sixth: There is no sixth...you're done! Unless you want to decorate further, which the girlies did. They sewed some gold and silver fabric shiny stars on their tutu's and some shimmery fabric flowers. some ribbon with jingly bells. They LOVED sewing bits and pieces on with needle and thread. I've explained that now whenever they find a stray special bead or lost button or sparkly little treasure, they can sew it on to their tutu's and just keep on decorating. I could see their creative minds stirring with excitement at this prospect.
Well, when all was said and done, Indigo and Cypress put on a brilliant dance show for Zephyr, their Dad and their Gran........here's a snippet we caught on film....(click link to video) Live, Love, Laugh....and Dance
