Right after Halloween fun, (the very next Saturday!) we celebrated Indigo's 7th birthday. Most of us were sick, especially little Zephyr (Fifth's Disease), so we kept celebrating at home with just family. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect birthday! Indigo told me yesterday, out of the blue, ''Thank you for the best birthday, Mommy, I'm going to remember it for ever'' (insert happy Mommy tears :)
Indigo woke up to a festive breakfast table full of balloons and a few prezzies. I found a 'Barbie Horse' I knew she would adore at the local charity shop, which was a big hit. And a cow puzzle at the local store on the Goring high street she had eyeballed eagerly one day (both prezzies less than £1 but priceless the excitement when she opened them). Her siblings loaded her up with some new Schelich animals (those do very well in our home!). We gave Indigo 'The Ordinary Princess' as her traditional birthday book, and the biggest prezzie of the day was an 'Indigo's Art Box' I made for her. It was an old Spanish cedar box I had for years that fit perfect for this ensemble. I covered the top part in tissue paper collage with rainbow colours, then the bottom in a purple with a black triangle design. I also glued a chalkboard to the top. Then covered the inside top with oragami papers, and a red felt bottom. painting the borders black-n-white for 'whimsy'. I didn't get to finish the inside top in time, so the 'blue bubble' square I glued on looks out-of-place, but once I border it with the black-n-white whimsy stripes it'll fit in. Hubby installed all the handles/locks/catch back on so it was a team effort. I then filled the box with water colour paints (the easy kiddo ones and proper Gouache tubes), paintbrushes, paper, paint dots, chalk, pastels, etc. All from the local high street and really inexpensive but Indigo has since put to good use painting many pictures. She had also wished for an artist's easel which I happen to have hidden in my stuff (unused) so we gave her the easel as well, that is now VERY much used :) Indigo's Gran gave her a 'Puppy in My Pocket' hospital set which has become a novelty, and will come in handy for the 'My Little Puppy' board game I'm making for her Christmas prezzie (the puppies will be the playing pieces). And just today the most Beautiful flower arrangement came from her Aunt Donna in America. Indigo has taken great care to put the flowers in the perfect vase, give them the perfect temperature water and some yummy flower food. She really is a nurturing type personality, and this Momma is feeling good knowing she had a lovely birthday :)
Oh, and I almost forgot the grand finale of Saturday's birthday. I made a 'Magic Unicorn Cake'. It looked like a plain chocolate cake, with a plastic unicorn on top, but when you cut inside it was rainbow colours. The picture to the left is from the internet. Mine didn't turn out so colourful as I didn't have blue, and I let the yellow cake batter be the natural 'yellow'. BUT, still WOWed our little girl (she painted a 'Thank You' picture later for the unicorn for turning the cake into a rainbow for her birthday). You can use Annatto for natural red colour, and the green comes from seaweed. I've read that as long as you avoid the FD&C colours you're doing okay (and just make sure no red from beetles). For the cake I just used an old fashioned yellow cake mix from scratch. Here's link to some instructions on how to do the rainbow effect (just ignore the unhealthy boxed cake mix/jello instructions and skip straight to the colouring instructions) http://www.omnomicon.com/rainbowcake
Although here's another way to do it looks interesting: http://meganscookin.blogspot.com/2009/06/rainbow-cake-and-now-you-know-rest-of.html
